When it comes to CPL course eligibility eyesight is an important factor but the idea of perfect eyesight can be a bit misleading. You do not need naturally perfect vision to pursue a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) but your vision must meet the standards set by the aviation authorities. This is mainly to ensure safety during flights.
For a CPL candidates are required to have good visual acuity. Typically this means:
Correctable vision: If you have vision problems, glasses or contact lenses are allowed to meet the required standard.
Color vision: You must be able to distinguish colors clearly, which is crucial for reading instruments and signals.
Depth perception: Proper binocular vision is required to judge distances accurately.
If your eyesight is slightly weaker than normal but correctable with lenses you can still meet CPL course eligibility. However uncorrectable severe vision problems may prevent you from qualifying.
Many aspiring pilots worry unnecessarily about eyesight. In reality millions of pilots wear corrective lenses and have successful careers. The key is to undergo a medical examination by a certified aviation medical examiner to determine if your vision meets the required standards.
If your vision cannot be corrected to the required standard unfortunately you will not be eligible for a CPL. This can be disappointing but there are alternative aviation careers such as air traffic control aviation management or drone piloting which do not require perfect vision.
