India's aviation sector is expanding rapidly. Airlines in India have ordered more than 2,000 new aircraft which will need many additional pilots once they enter service. At the same time rising passenger air traffic increased flights between big cities and small towns and new regional routes and airports are creating many fresh flying opportunities. Also, many senior pilots are retiring or leaving for international airlines. This attrition means fresh pilots (with CPL/PPL) are increasingly needed to fill vacancies.
According to recent analyses India will require around 1,500-2,000 new pilots every year over the coming decade to keep up with growth in airlines routes and pilot retirements. On a longer term basis some industry forecasts estimate that over the next 10 years India will need 35,000-40,000 new pilots in total.
Because demand is high and growing, this is a favorable time to aim for a pilot career in India. New pilots who complete their training and certifications at the right time will have strong chances of getting jobs whether in major airlines, regional carriers, cargo operations or charter flights.
However as highlighted by the article it's not enough just to have a basic license (CPL/PPL). Due to high competition and demand for experienced pilots aspiring flyers should aim for type rated certification build flight hours and stay ready for training and upgrades when needed.
