If you are dreaming of flying aircraft as a career the first step is to understand what is a commercial pilot license (CPL) and how long it takes to get one. In India the duration of a commercial pilot license program usually depends on the flight school, the student's learning pace and weather conditions that may affect flying hours.

Generally the full duration to complete a CPL training course in India ranges from 18 to 24 months. During this period students complete both ground training and flight training. Ground training covers subjects such as air navigation aviation meteorology air regulations and aircraft technical knowledge. These topics help a student understand the theory behind aviation operations and prepare for the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) examinations.

Once the ground classes are completed students start flight training. To apply for a CPL in India a minimum of 200 flying hours is required. Depending on how quickly a student completes their flying hours and passes DGCA exams the duration can vary. Students who train regularly and clear exams on time can finish the entire process faster usually within 18 months.

Some students also choose to train abroad and then convert their foreign CPL to an Indian CPL which may take additional time for documentation and conversion tests. The total duration might then extend to around 2 years.
