A First Officer sometimes called co pilot is a commercial pilot who sits in the right seat next to the Captain and helps fly the aircraft safely. The First Officer is second in command: they assist the Captain in flying navigation communication safety procedures and emergency operations.
Pass 10+2 with PCM - Physics Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12 are required to enter pilot training.
Obtain Class 1 Medical certificate - You must be physically and mentally fit as certified by a doctor approved by the aviation authority.
Enter a flying school and clear exams - Join a DGCA-approved flying school, complete ground classes and practical training, and pass the required exams.
Get a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) - Typically after completing required flying hours (for example 200 hours), clear skill tests to earn the CPL.
Acquire a type-rating - After CPL, you must train on a specific aircraft model (like Airbus A320 or Boeing B737) to be eligible to fly that aircraft.
Clear airline selection & training - Apply to airlines clear their interview simulator tests and internal training programmes.
Start as Junior First Officer / First Officer - Once selected you begin flying flights under supervision gradually building hours and experience.
Being a First Officer is an important first step toward a long term aviation career. It gives you real world flying experience, the chance to work with a Captain and prepares you for future promotion for example to Senior First Officer or Captain as you accumulate more flight hours and training.
